Specialty coffee in Australia

Specialty coffee in Australia grew from espresso brought by Italian and Greek immigrants after the Second World War, and independent cafés still dominate. Australia's coffee culture is famously independent: global chains have struggled there, while local cafés turned the flat white and the cappuccino into everyday rituals. The scene has since moved on from drink-based menus toward origin-focused coffee, reserve menus and premium filter offerings, and prices have risen accordingly.

The cafés listed so far are concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne and their suburbs, including Alexandria, Haymarket, Hurstville, Rockdale, Richmond, Collingwood and Earlwood. Coverage of the rest of the country is still limited.

Roasters listed include Rumble Coffee Roasters, with its espresso bar on Macaulay Road in Melbourne, and Kimberley Coffee Company, which also sells online. Expect espresso with milk as the default order, with filter increasingly offered alongside it.
