The best coffee in Birmingham

4 cafés mapped·2 roasters·1 neighborhoods

Specialty coffee in Birmingham, Alabama is a small but growing scene, from a Lakeview District roastery to roasters in suburban Homewood and Hoover.

Daysol Coffee Lab is the local coffee roaster in Birmingham proper. It began with a black-coffee roastery bar in Helena, moved retail to Bluff Park in 2023, and now combines café and roastery in a former brewery at 2616 3rd Ave S, with a Diedrich roaster raised on a platform in view of the bar. The menu covers espresso, cold brew on tap and house-made syrups.

Just outside city limits, Seeds Coffee Co. on Oxmoor Road in Homewood roasts its own coffee and has built its identity around direct relationships with growers since 2013. Baba Java Coffee roasts at its own facility in Hoover and runs a café there. Downtown in Central City, Frothy Monkey operates as an all-day café with coffee, food, beer and wine.

Expect roastery cafés and relaxed neighborhood shops rather than a dense downtown coffee strip.
