Specialty coffee in Finland

Specialty coffee in Finland builds on a national love of light-roast filter coffee in the country that drinks the most coffee per person in the world. Finns drink four to five cups a day on average, and coffee breaks are written into collective labour agreements. The traditional cup is a very light-roasted filter made from supermarket coffee, so specialty roasters extended a familiar taste rather than introducing a new one. Kaffa Roastery, founded in 2010, roasts very light to suit Finland's soft water; Helsingin Kahvipaahtimo followed in 2011. Finnish competitors include Kaisa Kokkonen, 2019 national barista champion, and Jani Mikkonen, national Brewers Cup champion from 2018 to 2020.

Helsinki holds most of the country's specialty cafés, concentrated in Kallio and Punavuori. The striking feature of the Finnish map is its spread of roasters: Tampere, Lahti, Turku and Lappeenranta each have their own, and Espoo, Mikkeli and Vantaa have specialty cafés.

Roasters that shape Finnish taste include Kaffa Roastery, Frukt Coffee Roasters, The Good Coffee Company, Helsingin Kahvipaahtimo, Turun Kahvipaahtimo, Kahvipaahtimo Lehmus and Mokkamestarit. Expect filter coffee as the default and roasts kept very light.
