Specialty coffee in Estonia

Specialty coffee in Estonia arrived later than in Finland, and Tallinn's Paper Mill, opened in 2020 in a Soviet-era paper mill, put the city on the map. Paper Mill was founded by Margus Varvas and Kristel Parts, Estonians who returned from London, and roasts on a Probat in its café. The country's growth as a tech hub brought international residents and with them demand for specialty coffee. Rocket Bean from Riga has also opened in Tallinn.

Tallinn holds most of the country's specialty cafés and roasters. Tartu, the university city, has a smaller scene with its own roaster, and Viljandi has a café.

Roasters that shape Estonian taste include Paper Mill Coffee, KOKOMO Coffee Roasters, Karlova Kohv, Coffee People and The Brick Coffee Roastery. Expect espresso and filter at the specialty cafés, with Paper Mill's café sharing its space with the roastery.
