About PennyCup at the YMI

PennyCup Coffee Co. on South Market Street is a downtown Asheville specialty coffee café run by the local small-batch roaster PennyCup.

It sits in the historic YMI Building. Owners Bill Tanner and Amber Arthur opened it on New Year's Day 2016 with partner Matthew Burd as a full-service café. It serves espresso drinks, cold brew and single-origin coffees roasted nearby, with house-made pastries and bagel sandwiches such as a classic lox bagel. Coffee is sold by the pound. PennyCup takes its name from the penny universities of the 1800s. It opens daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Brewing espresso, cold brew — roasted in-house.
